Basic education lasts for nine years in Finland. It is intended for all children between 7 and 16. Basic education is free.

Support Classes for Children and Young People
Schools offer support classes for immigrants. The aim of these classes is to prepare children and young people for the transition to basic education. The main emphasis is on learning Finnish. During the preparatory teaching, students are transferred to groups corresponding to their age and abilities.
